NYC Orders $200 Million Transit Security System

New York’s Metropolitan Transit Authority has announced it will spend $200 million on a security system for the city’s subway and bus network, as well as two major commuter rail lines.

The Associated Press is reporting that the system from Lockheed Martin will feature closed-circuit cameras and motion detectors. The announcement comes just six weeks after terrorist attacks on the London transit system killed 52 people.

AP says the system “will cover platforms, stations and terminals but will not be installed inside train cars or buses.” The first cameras were installed last week, but MTA Executive Director Katherine Lapp told AP that it will take three years to install the whole system. The system will also cover bridges and tunnels.

The purchase is the MTA’s largest financial commitment to its counterterrorism program, AP says, and up until the signing of this deal, the agency had only spent a fraction of the budget for the $591 million security plan approved in 2002.
