Government Not Releasing Anti-Terror Data to "Shadow" Panel
The White House and several other government agencies aren’t turning over any information to the now-disbanded September 11 commission in the "shadow" panel’s renewed, unofficial investigation into whether or not the government is doing enough to prevent terrorist attacks on U.S. soil.
According to the New York Times’ Philip Shenon, Thomas Kean, the former Republican governor of New Jersey who led the commission, said the White House, the Pentagon, the State Department, the CIA, the FBI and other agencies had not responded to requests the unofficial panel made for information on the nation’s anti-terrorism programs.
The so-called "shadow" group was established after the September 11 commission was disbanded last year after releasing its official report, and does not have the subpoena powers of the official commission.
White House spokeswoman Dana Perino would not tell Shenon if the administration would respond to the panel’s requests for information before next month, when the group is scheduled to publish a report card on the progress of the government's counterterrorism efforts. She also told Shenon that most of the information was available from public sources.
