Telecomm Expert Asks: Can You Count On Your Carrier?

In an emergency, communications are often the key to recovery. However, in many disaster situations, the communications capability of an organization is one of the first things to fail.

Keeping the channels open, no matter what the emergency, is the focus of a recent article by Brian Fabiano, senior vice president of network services for Lightpath, a northeastern US telecommunications service provider.

The piece, entitled: Planning For The Worst To Ensure The Best: Disaster Recovery in Telecommunications, appeared last week on the industry hub, TCMnet.com. The story cautions the managers of enterprises to look for communications partners with verifiable emergency response plans.

Before choosing a carrier, Fabiano says, consider the design of a provider’s network. Also, ask for details about the brand and type of equipment the carrier uses and how it’s maintained. Also, seek clear answers about how customers are serviced in an emergency (i.e. what’s the size of the repair staff and how quickly can they respond to a disruption).
