Educated Employees Can Reduce Liability Exposure

An information security expert is warning companies that failing to recruit employees with recognized credentials or academic qualifications will leave your company open to corporate liability.

In an opinion column on ComputerWeekly.com, Richard Starnes, director of incident response for Cable & Wireless, argues that having certified or academically qualified personnel will lower your exposure to risk. "At the very least," he says, "it helps to demonstrate that your personnel meet a minimum acceptable standard of knowledge."

Starnes cites a source who says the company often retains financial responsibility for the errors of its employees. To minimize that risk, companies should hire someone who is qualified enough for the job they're doing. Companies should also be aware that certifications can provide them with the assurance that the employees who are responsible for information security and IT controls are qualified to do so.
