Is Health Care the Next Enron? With government prosecutions on the rise in the health care industry, a new white paper is aiming to address the complicated issues of corporate accountability and compliance throughout the industry. The white paper, available on the Medical DeviceLink Web site, examines the overall impact of the heightened scrutiny of the health care industry, and offers organizations a chance to learn how to mitigate fraud, waste and abuse. The paper cites two major trends as the reason for the increase in governmental prosecutorial activity in the health care industry. The first is the concern over waste, fraud and abuse in the industry that has prompted the Department of Justice to identify eradicating health care fraud as its number two priority after eliminating violent crime. The second is the increasing awareness among employees of the economic benefits of becoming a "whistleblower." The result of the government's increased focus, it says, is that organizations must understand the structures and regulations, as well as learn how to avoid, or at a minimum, mitigate risks. According to the paper, the best way for a health care organization to mitigate risk is to implement an effective compliance program. To read the entire paper, click here:
