Travel Risks: Business Travelers Be Advised!

No one can fault international business travelers for looking over their shoulders while in transit abroad. Terrorism and other forms of political violence have made some parts of the world dangerous for North American and European business travelers.

iJet, a travel risk management firm headquartered in Annapolis, MD, recently issued a list of the 10 most dangerous countries in the world. The list is available at http://www.ijet.com/news/pr/2003/2003-09-17_Top10Terrorism.html . Yemen, Indonesia, Israel, Kenya and Nigeria made the iJet list as hotspots for Islamic militants. A number of recent, widely publicized and deadly attacks in these countries contributed to their inclusion on the list.

Similarly, Russia has suffered a string of terrorist attacks in recent years in response to Moscow's suppression of Chechen separatists. Columbia's violent revolutionary movements have made that country unsafe for travelers, says iJet, as have extremist groups in the Philippines. Basque separatists have targeted Spain's tourism industry in recent years, which prompted iJet to add it to the list as well. And finally, Thailand made the top 10, according to iJet, because of a variety of international business targets and a relatively disorganized counter-terrorist capability on the part of local authorities.

Extremely hazardous countries, such as Afghanistan, Somalia and Iraq were not included in the iJet list. According to the company, while those countries are perhaps the most dangerous on the planet in 2003, not enough business travelers have dealings there to warrant their inclusion. iJet maintains security risk ratings for 182 countries.
