How to Find the Right Emergency Management Training Program
Schools and learning institutions across the country offer plenty of good programs that teach emergency management and homeland security – and there are a lot of programs that aren’t up to par. How do you choose the right program to upgrade your skills?

In an article on Government Technology’s Emergency Management website, Bob Jaffin says it’s up to the individual to find the right program to accomplish his or her goals. “It’s your responsibility to determine your goals and which program will best help you accomplish them,” he writes. “You must realize that the higher education marketplace has its con artists, degree mills and get-rich-quick promises. Part of your job is to diligently research the institution and program of interest.”

In the article, Jaffin highlights some questions to ask when looking for the right program, including:

• How old is the program?
• What are the qualifications of the core staff?
• How diverse are the staff backgrounds?
• Is the school/program accredited?
• Does it offer programs that will support my lifelong objectives?

Jaffin also reviews a number of online resources to help discover the programs that are out there. He breaks down the schools and programs, including doctorate programs, masters’ degrees and public administration programs.
