US Dept. of Labor’s $22 Million Aid to Louisiana for Gustav Recovery "This $22 million emergency grant will fund 4,000 jobs for workers to help Louisiana communities recover from Hurricane Gustav damage," said U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao. "Funds will also be used to provide Louisiana residents in need with vital humanitarian assistance including food, clothing and shelter." There are 34 parishes in Louisiana that, on September 2nd, have been declared eligible by FEMA for the agency’s Public Assistance program. Awarded to the Louisiana Workforce Commission, the grant will fund the temporary employment needed for the cleanup, demolition, repair, renovation and reconstruction of destroyed structures and public lands. Only $7,400,000 will be immediately released, with the rest being made available as the state demonstrates a continued need for disaster assistance. National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary of labor’s discretionary funds and are awarded on a state’s ability to meet specific guidelines. For more information, visit www.doleta.gov/NEG.
