Collaboration is Key to Good Security, Expert Says

Information security risks are on the rise in what appears to be a never-ending cycle of security vulnerabilities. What’s the key to security success? One industry-watcher says it’s “cross-border” collaboration throughout the industry.

In his blog on the CSO.com website, Dan Lohrmann says he’s travelled the country, and everywhere “people are feeling overwhelmed and under-staffed when faced with mounting security threats.”

What can security professionals do about it? Lohrmann says the problems are too big for any one person or company to handle alone, even if you have a good security team in place. It’s also about having good relationships with vendors who can really help, and colleagues around the country whom you can talk to in a pinch.

“In Michigan, we just released a new version of our Michigan IT Strategic Plan,” Lohrmann writes. “Although we’ve done quite a bit in the collaboration area already, we realize that we still have a ways to go. The cross-boundary opportunities are immense across evey business area in state government and IT needs to help lead the way. Security can truly be an enabler — IF we spread that message. Breaking through old ‘turf wars’ and doing more cross-boundary can save big dollars and enhance cyber security.”

While security threats aren’t going away any time soon, Lorhmann says it’s through working together that we can get a handle on security. “The criminals are collaborating, so we need to as well,” he writes. “We’re all in this security battle together.”
