| How to Improve your Disaster Recovery Plans When it comes to disaster recovery, it’s a good idea to update your plans. Today’s industry has a number of new tools and techniques to help optimize DR. Is it time to refresh your own DR plan? In an article on the ComputerWorld website, Bill Snyder takes a look at the latest technologies and services available for disaster recovery. Snyder says that while virtualization technologies tend to steal the spotlight, there are a number of techniques out there that can also work, including WAN optimization and appliance-based e-mail backup. Today’s professionals are not just adopting new technologies either. “They are asking themselves what disaster recovery will do to improve business as a whole,” Michael Croy, director of business continuity solutions at Forsythe Solutions Group Inc., told Snyder. That could mean, for example, leveraging IT assets acquired during a merger by putting the excess capacity to work as a backup or mirror site, or making underutilized resources part of a disaster recovery arsenal. Snyder also adds that while disaster planning needs to be high on your to-do list, it doesn’t mean you have to bust your budget.
