New Solutions Emerge for Data Backup Challenges

Data is everywhere today, and the challenges of data backup are no different for small and medium businesses than they are for large. Now a new crop of data backup technologies are helping smaller companies meet their data backup needs.

According to an article by Paul Korzeniowski on the bMighty.com website, there are many new vendors out there trying to fill the void for smaller businesses. “These vendors rely on the Internet to ease the backup process,” he says. “Customers sign up for the service, decide which files need to be backed up, establish a schedule, and then watch these vendors back up their files automatically. The services are inexpensive, ranging in price from as little as $50 to tens of few thousand dollars per year, depending on the amount of information that needs to be tracked.”

Those easy-to-use new technologies also mean the market is growing rapidly, Korzeniowski says. He cites an International Data Corp. (IDC) study which projects that annual revenue from these services will reach $715 million by 2011, representing a 33.3 percent compound annual growth (CAGR) from 2006.

Why the boost in new services? Korzeniowski says it’s because the newer services “offer small and medium businesses a potential solution to a perplexing problem.” He recommends IT departments take a closer look at them.
