NEW CHAIR OF BUSINESS CONTINUITY INSTITUTE APPOINTED
At the December BCI Board meeting, Larry Kalmis, FBCI was appointed Chair of the BCI Board. Larry has been Vice Chair and Chair of the Executive Committee for the past two years. At the same meeting Steve Mellish, FBCI was appointed Vice Chair and Chris Green, MBCI as Chair of the Standards Committee. Julia Graham, FBCI, Carol Moffitt, MBCI, Rolf von Roessing, FBCI and David Smith, FBCI remain Chairs of the Communications Panel, Standards, Audit and Education Committees repectively.

The Business Continuity Institute (BCI) was established in 1994 to provide opportunities to obtain guidance and support from fellow professionals. The Institute provides an internationally recognised status in relation to the individuals experience as a continuity practitioner. The BCI has over 1450 members in 41 countries. The wider role of the BCI is to promote the highest standards of professional competence and commercial ethics in the provision and maintenance of business continuity planning and services. Association of Contingency Planners (ACP) announces Orange County Chapter Twenty Year Anniversary
The Association of Contingency Planners (ACP) announces the twenty-year anniversary of the chartering of the Orange County, California Chapter, which provides business continuity professionals in the Orange County and Southern California area the opportunity to network and continue their business continuity education. ASSOCIATION OF SACRAMENTO AREA PLANNERS
Meetings of the Association of Sacramento Area Planners are held the second Wednesday of each month at 9:00 A.M. at Vision Services Plan (VSP) 3333 Quality Drive, Rancho Cordova, California. VSP provides us with a comfortable meeting room that is large enough for our group and the necessary presentation equipment.

BICEPP ERT Challenge Set for April 2004
Business & Industry Council for Emergency Planning and Preparedness (BICEPP) based in Los Angeles, California will hold a special skills competition for Corporate and Community Emergency Response Teams on April 3 and 4th. The BICEPP ERT Challenge will test team member skills through competition in a number of skill stations that are timed and judged by a panel of experts.

John Laye wins Business Recovery Managers Annual Excellence Award
John Laye, Managing Partner for Contingency Management Consultants, was named the winner of the annual Excellence Award of the Business Recovery Managers Association (BRMA) a professional association for Business Continuity Managers headquartered in San Francisco, CA.

The award is presented to a professional or organization that shows excellence in the advancement of the theory and practice of business recovery, disaster recovery, continuity planning, and emergency response management.

BRMA's recognition was part of the annual meeting attended by over 100 corporate and government disaster recovery, business continuity and emergency managers. BRMA members work in both the private and public sectors. BRMA provides an environment where members can keep informed about the latest trends and technologies available in the continuity planning industry.

In 2002, Laye's textbook for colleges and executives "Avoiding Disaster - How To Keep Your Business Going When Catastrophe Strikes" was published by John Wiley and Sons Inc. This was the highlight of his disaster management career, which began in 1972.

After a career as a Naval officer, he directed the University of California at Berkeley's certificate program for emergency preparedness managers. Since then he has earned Certifications as an Emergency Manger, Disaster Recovery Institute's Certified Business Continuity Planner; and Fellow of the Business Continuity Institute. Presently, he mentors policy groups about planning against terrorism and other high risks at the Homeland Security Emergency Management Institute. Laye's research on executive decision-making about cost-effective emergency preparedness is the basis for his articles in business and professional journals.

Laye was nominated by Rhonda Jones, of the Enterprise Security & Availability Group, LLC, who stated "John does everything within his power to support his colleagues, associates, and clients, whether through the tough times of new consulting or the catastrophe that accompanies an ill prepared event."

The Emergency Information Infrastructure Partnership/Project (EIIP) is a public benefit, not for profit educational corporation. The purpose of the EIIP is to promote the safety, health, and welfare of the general public by supporting and enhancing the effectiveness of those individuals, whether paid or unpaid, full-time or part-time, engaged in emergency / disaster management. The EIIP accomplishes this goal by providing educational opportunities that include participating in or hosting public discussion groups, forums, panels, lectures, or workshops through the EIIP Virtual Forum Web site www.emforum.org

INFORMATION SYSTEMS AUDIT AND CONTROL ASSOCIATION
Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA) got its start in 1967, when a small group of individuals with similar jobs-auditing controls in the computer systems that were becoming increasingly critical to the operations of their organizations-sat down to discuss the need for a centralized source of information and guidance in the field. INSTITUTE FOR BUSINESS & HOME SAFETY

PARTNERSHIP FOR EMERGENCY PLANNING (PEP)
Partnership for Emergency Planning, PEP, is a partnership of private businesses and public sector service agencies. It is a public/private partnership of individuals who come together to share and become better prepared to respond to an emergency and recover from a disaster.

PEP was founded in 1989 as a non-profit organization dedicated to emergency planning issues in the metropolitan Kansas City area. Membership has expanded over the past years and now includes hospitals, school districts, municipalities, federal, state and local emergency management associations, and some of the largest corporations in Missouri & Kansas. Membership representation now reaches out from the core of Kansas City to other outlying regions.

We are an independent, non-fee-based organization which seeks to promote cross-sector discussions revolving around the continuity of both business and community in the event of an unplanned event .
