Homeland Security to Issue E-Mail Warnings

The Department of Homeland Security will now send out e-mail warnings when a virus like the recent Mydoom virus attacks Internet infrastructure.

The department's National Cyber Security Division has been working with Carnegie Mellon University's CERT Coordination Center and private industry to offer several mailing lists for the alerts. Some lists are aimed at technical professionals, while others are for average Internet users.

Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., criticized the program, saying the agency should instead mandate that Internet service providers report virus attacks immediately. He warns that the next big virus will trick users into opening it by disguising itself as a Department of Homeland Security alert.
