Why Your Employees Need Security at Home

Your employees might not think a warning about Nigerian advance-fee fraud has much to do with corporate security, but getting employees to make security a priority at home can help at work, says M.E. Kabay.

Kabay, an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Information Systems at Norwich University, tackles this topic in the latest edition of Network World Security Newsletter. He says a psychological phenomenon called internalization can help employees become security-minded.

He says that an employee who works to protect his or her family from information security threats will internalize security as part of his own interests and value systems. When you ask that employee to cooperate with a security project at work, Kabay says he may respond better than if he has never done anything security-related.

Kabay recommends that companies include a home security tip or two in their corporate newsletters. It doesn't cost anything beyond the cost of the newsletter itself and it could provide a big payback for companies in terms of security.
