THE AOK STORY
Founded in 1961 by Mr. Henry Medina Sr. for the manufacturing of products. He experienced first hand the horror of being in a high-rise during an earthquake in California. Guests that were unable to walk, navigate stairs, or in wheelchairs were left stranded on the upper floors, abandoned because there was no method of evacuating them. He invented the first Rescue Chair that rides the stair and turns in 36" radius. The Model #1900 with 3 patents, weight of only 27 lbs. can hold a person up to 330 lbs.. It is collapsible to 8 3/4 " and opens in less then 5 seconds with a new Red color on seat and back of chair. Patent's #5,338,048A, #6,561,524B1 & #7,125,022B2.
The bombings of the World Trade Center, the Oklahoma Federal Building exposed the ineffective methods of evacuating the Disabled, Injured, Unconscious individuals during a disaster. These tragic events highlighted the major difficulties facing emergency evacuation involving multiple story structures. When elevators are unavailable because of Loss of power, Fire, Earthquake, the stairs are the only means of evacuation from a building.
Enactment of the American Disabilities Act (1900 ADA) requires employers to provide reasonable accommodations for disabled employees. The Rescue Chair meets or exceeds any evacuation method currently available. The Rescue Stair Chair that rides the stairs may be the only method.
