Homeland Security Costs Rising For Some Cities

Following last month's orange terror alert, many cities across the country are reporting elevated security costs.

According to a recent Associated Press (AP) wire story, Los Angeles has spent $9.3 million and New Jersey has spent $2.7 million so far, and while New York state officials haven't fully accounted for December's orange alert, the previous alert cost New York City somewhere between $5 million and $7 million per week.

AP's Robert Tanner wrote in a recent wire story that many local officials say they're concerned about how and when the federal government plans to reimburse them for money spent during the recent period of heightened alert.

Conversely, Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee told AP the recent alert won't create financial hardship for his state. New Hampshire, Colorado and a number of small cities reported no additional costs. California's Highway Patrol says they cut additional spending by 20 percent from the last alert, and North Dakota increased highway patrols, but didn't expect any significant expenses.
