Tech Companies Suffer Data Breaches, Survey Says

Technology, media and telecommunications (TMT) companies don't provide adequate resources and funding for security, despite the fact that more than half had breaches in the past 12 months, according to the new survey entitled "Protecting the Digital Assets" by Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu.

According to Deloitte, the majority of tech companies say they are "reactive" rather than proactive when it comes to investing in information security, and only four percent believe they are doing enough to address the problem.

The study also found that while phishing is considered to be a major threat to tech companies, only 25 percent say they have implemented anti-phishing technologies. Only 37 percent have provided security training to their employees in the past 12 months, and only 24 percent say they believe they are using the security tools they've deployed effectively.

Other findings include:

  • Only 20 percent of technology companies surveyed are "confident" their patents and other intellectual property are properly protected while 24 percent are "concerned" or "very concerned" about IP protection.
  • Half of the TMT companies reporting breaches were attacked from inside the company.
