Compliance a Main Driver Of BC Planning, Study Finds

A new survey has found that one of the major drivers of business continuity efforts is regulatory compliance. Does that mean we’re forgetting we need business continuity in the event of a disaster?

According to an article by Dave Cook on the CFO.com website, the new survey by Deloitte & Touche LLP and CPM Group found that more than 83 percent of companies have developed business continuity plans, compared with only 30 percent of companies 6 years ago.

The survey found that the heightened attention for business continuity efforts “show that executive management remains primarily concerned with regulatory compliance,” the report says.

But the survey also found that businesses aren’t forgetting their fiduciary responsibilities in the event of a disaster. “New concerns about bird flu have joined existing worries about terrorism to keep business continuity an executive priority,” Cook says.

Cook does say that the survey noted that more than half of responding companies believe that the Department of Homeland Security's Threat Advisory System “rarely has value in supporting their own contingency response planning.”
