Ten Remedies for Ten Security Ailments You can spend a fortune on firewalls, intrusion detection systems and other technologies, but all it takes is one employee linking up his laptop with his unsecured home PC to derail even the best efforts. Do you know what security mistakes you’re making? In a new article on the CIO website, writer Thomas Wailgum outlines ten common security aliments and offers the experts’ advice on how to remedy those problems. According to Wailgum, all of the problems involve some sort of user education and training. “How do you stop stupid mistakes?” Mark Lobel, a partner in the security practice at PricewaterhouseCoopers, asked Wailgum. “It's education and security awareness—basic blocking and tackling—and it does not have to cost a fortune.” Among the “ailments” that Wailgum outlines are: uneducated users; sending out e-mails that violate someone’s privacy; not having a policy in place on who has access to what information; social engineering; loose security on laptops; losing data tapes; employees selling laptops and handheld devices with confidential information; overuse of instant messaging; unsecured home computing linking up with work computers, and; allowing unauthorized individuals to have access to networks.
