Federal Grants Helping Local Schools, Communities

North Carolina Schools Conference

A North Carolina community has used grant monies from the Department of Education to fund a conference addressing preparedness for disasters—man-made and natural—among local schools.  The conference, according to ENC Today, will feature training exercises and speeches from NC Attorney General Roy Cooper and school safety specialist Billy Lassiter.

The article continues: “Some of the safety practices in place in Craven schools include lockdown drills, required identification badges, placement of stickers on cars to readily identify suspicious vehicles and improved communications between law enforcement and school officials” according to Janet Furman, spokeswoman for Craven schools.

Disaster Preparedness Training in Iron County, MI

An article in the Ironwood Daily Globe asks: “Are we ready?” and details information about upcoming classes geared to make “their families, their homes and their communities safer from the threat of disasters of all kinds.”

Local residents are being urged to attend First Aid classes, which are made possible by funding to state health departments through the Homeland Security Act of 2002, and are the first phase of teaching Iron County residents how to best respond should a disaster occur in their community.
