Gulf Coast IT Managers Scrambled to Prepare for Rita

Hurricane Rita made landfall last Saturday, but not without giving us a bit of warning. Did IT managers learn the lessons taught by Katrina and implement disaster recovery plans in time?

According to an article by Lucas Mearian, Todd R. Weiss and Patrick Thibodeau on the Computerworld website, IT managers were scrambling late last week to put DR plans in place as Rita continued its path toward the Gulf Coast.

The writers spoke to a number of IT managers in the area to find out how their DR plans were holding up. One, Gregory E. Landis, president of Jaguar Technologies LLC, told them his plan was already in place even before the Rita warnings. That plan includes topping off emergency diesel generators with fuel and monitoring remote and on-site customer systems.

In another instance, Lynette Ring, help desk coordinator at Houston-based Hines Interests LP, told the writers that her company has had the same DR plan for the past two years, which includes replicating data to Dallas and shutting down operations two days in advance of the storm.

But some companies – particularly those struck by Katrina at the end of August – are finding themselves with more of a problem, the writers say. Lenny Sawyer, CEO of Sawyer Real Estate, Inc. in Gulfport, MS, told them he just brought his firm’s servers and PC back online last week, just before Rita. Sawyer said in the future, he will look into replicating data to a storage provider in an area of the country where hurricanes can't threaten it.
