Study Finds Homeland Security Workers Less Rewarded

A new study released last week shows that workers at the Department of Homeland Security – which includes the Federal Emergency Management Agency – have some of the least rewarding jobs in the federal government.

Reuters is reporting that the survey of 150,000 workers at 30 federal agencies found that the DHS ranked second-to-last as a place to work, with only the Small Business Administration ranking lower.

Max Stier, president of the Partnership for Public Service, who analyzed the report, told Reuters that while the DHS’s performance wasn’t encouraging, it wasn’t much of a surprise. “It is typical of when you see large-scale merger and change operations, whether it is the private sector or the public sector, it has a very large impact on employee morale,” Stier told Reuters. “There is a lot of work to do to make sure that DHS has the kind of engaged employee that will enable it to better meet the challenges that it will undoubtedly face going forward.”

The report cited the White House Office of Management and Budget as the best agency to work for in the government.
