Unregulated Internet, Insecure America

Just as the chemical industry asked US Congress to regulate it a few years ago, other industries might soon realize that it might be in their best interest if government is allowed to do its job in protecting Internet users.

In an article on the Christian Science Monitor website, Walter Rodgers says America has long wanted its government to mind its own business and stay away from the Internet. President Obama has stated he will not impose security standards on private companies. In addition, a ruling last month sidelined the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) as a watchdog of broadband services “leaving it with almost no regulatory jurisdiction in that area,” says the article.

Mr. Rob Knake, of the Council on Foreign Relations said the Internet will “fundamentally be an unregulated and unregulatable industry unless Congress intervenes.”

Although some industry players might see the FCC ruling as a victory, says the article, US consumers lose billions each year to unwanted Internet intrusions, not to mention the 80,000 cyberattacks that hit US defense networks each year.

“It may hurt all of us in the long term by limiting Washington’s ability to regulate the Web and keep it safe,” Rodgers writes.
